Life doesn’t always go the way we plan. There are moments of deep pain, disappointment, and hardship that leave us questioning “Why me?” and “How do I move forward?”
In his book “When Life Hits Hard”, Dr. Omar Suleiman beautifully reminds us that our struggles are not signs of abandonment but opportunities to draw closer to Allah (s.w.t.). Let’s explore some of the key lessons we can learn.
Hardship is Part of the Journey
Allah (s.w.t.) tells us in the Qur’an:
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْخَوْفِ وَٱلْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَنفُسِ وَٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ (١٥٥)
We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure—
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155)
Trials are not punishments, but pathways for growth. They teach us patience, humility, and reliance on Allah (s.w.t.).
Pain Can Be a Source of Healing
Often, when we hit rock bottom, we realise that the only One we can fully depend on is Allah (s.w.t.). Hardship strips away illusions of control and reconnects us with the Source of all strength.
Hardships Don’t Last Forever
Every storm eventually passes. Allah (s.w.t.) promises ease after difficulty not once, but twice in Surah Ash-Sharh,
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا (٥) إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًۭا (٦)
So, surely with hardship comes ease. Surely with that hardship comes more ease.
(Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:5-6)
This repetition is a divine reassurance: no matter how heavy the burden feels, relief is on its way.
Turning Pain into Purpose
Our struggles can either break us or make us. When we choose to see them as lessons and as ways to bring us closer to Allah (s.w.t.), they transform into sources of strength.
These are just glimpses of the timeless reminders found in “When Life Hits Hard”. The book is filled with practical guidance, Qur’anic reflections and prophetic wisdom to help us navigate the storms of life with hope and faith.
